The snow leopard is usually found above the tree line and permanent snow in central Asia's dry mountainous country. While it is not known exactly how many snow leopards live in their natural habitat, the population of the species is considered in decline, and in many places they are rare. Humans are the principal threat to their survival, mainly because of loss of habitat from the expansion of human populations. Humans have also hunted the snow leopard for sport, destroyed the animal as a predator of domestic flocks, and sought the large cat for its fur.

In 2000, more than 550 snow leopards were living in zoos, where they have been bred successfully. The snow leopard is listed as an endangered species and is legally protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. In some places, however, enforcement of regulations is difficult. Reserves have been set aside for both the cat and its prey species.

These beautiful gray leopards live in the mountains of Central Asia. They are insulated by thick hair, and their wide, fur-covered feet act as natural snowshoes. These cats have powerful legs and are tremendous leapers, able to jump as far as 50 feet (15 meters). Snow leopards use their long tails for balance and as blankets to cover sensitive body parts against the severe mountain chill.

Snow leopards prey upon the blue sheep (bharal) of Tibet and the Himalayas, and mountain ibex found over most of the rest of their range. Though these powerful predators can kill animals three times their weight, they also eat smaller fare, such as marmots, hares, and game birds.

One Indian snow leopard, protected and observed in a national park, is reported to have consumed five blue sheep, nine Tibetan woolly hares, twenty-five marmots, five domestic goats, one domestic sheep, and fifteen birds in a single year.

As these numbers indicate, snow leopards sometimes have a taste for domestic animals, which has led to many deaths of the big cats at the hands of herders.

These endangered cats appear to be in dramatic decline because of such killings, and due to poaching driven by illegal trades in pelts and in body parts used for traditional Chinese medicine. Vanishing habitat and the decline of the cats' large mammal prey are also contributing factors.
Native to the Central Asian mountains, the snow leopard is a rare sight, with only about 6,000 left in the wild. They are hunted for their beautiful, warm fur and for their organs, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Everything happens for the best. If the person you love doesn't love you back, dont be afraid to love someone else again, for you'll never know unless you give it a try. You'll never love a person unless you risk for love. Love strives in hurting. If you dont get hurt, you dont learn how to love. Love doesnt hurt all the time, though the hurting is still there to test you and help you grow. Dont find love, let love find you. That is why it is called falling in love because you dont force yourself to fall. You just fall. You cannot finish a book without closing its chapters. If you want to go on, then you have to leave the past as you turn the pages. Love is not destroyed by a single failure or won by a single caress. It is a lifetime venture in which we are always learning, discovering and growing. The greatest irony of love is letting go when you need to hold on and holding on when you need to let go. We lose someone we love only when we are destined to find someone else who can love us even more than we can love ourselves. On falling out of love, take some time to heal and then get back on the horse. Dont ever make the same mistake of riding the same one that threw you the first time. To love is to risk rejection; to live is to risk dying, to hope is to risk failure. But risk must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is risking nothing. To reach for another is to risk involvement, to expose your feelings is to expose true self; to love is to risk not to be loved in return.

How to define love: fall but do not stumble, be constant but not too persistent, share and never be unfair. Understand and try not to demand, hurt but keep the pain. Love is like a knife. It can stab the heart or it can carve wonderful images into the soul that always last for a lifetime. Love is supposed to be the most wonderful feeling. IT should inspire you and give you joy and strength. Sometimes the things that give you joy can also hurt you in the end. Loving people mans giving them freedom that they choose to be and where they choose to be. Loving someone means giving them the freedom to find their way, whether it leaves towards you or away from you. Love is a painful risk to take but the risk must be taken no matter how scary or painful, for only then you'll experience the fullness of humanity and that is love. Only love can hurt your heart, fill you with desire or tear you apart. Only love can make you cry and only love knows why. If you are not ready to cry, if your not ready to take that risk, or feel the pain, then your not ready to fall in love. There was a time in our lives when we became afraid to fall in love because every time we do, we get hurt. Then I figured thats why its called falling in love. When you decide to love, allow it to grow. When you promise to love, refuse to let it die.

Santa the Magical Person

Christmas is a very special time for many children -- the day presents are left by a magical person.

In the United States and Canada, his name is Santa Claus. He flies through the sky in a sleigh pulled by eight reindeer.

In England his name is Father Christmas. He looks much like Santa Claus, but he has a longer coat and a longer beard.

In Wales (a principality in the United Kingdom), Santa is called Sion Corn - this translates as "Chimney John" relating to the story that Santa comes down the chimney of each house to bring his gifts to the children within.

In France, he's known as Pere Noel. He is also called Pere Noel in Canada.

In Brazil and Peru, he's called Papai Noel.

In Germany, children get presents from Christkind, the Christ Child on the 24th of December. Also, in Germany Knecht Ruprecht and his helpers come on the 6th of December. Krampus brings coal or a wooden stick to the children that have not been good, Knecht Ruprecht brings mostly cookies, nuts and a small toy to the good children. Belsnickel - German version of Santa who carries a switch to beat the bad children. In Germany, Father Christmas can also be called der Weihnachtsmann.

In Poland, Santa "Swiety Mikolaj" (Saint Nicholas) was a cardinal in the Catholic Church, he visits children on December 6th and he brings presents, mostly sweets, which he leaves in children's clean shoes.

In some Slovac countries, Santa is "Swiety Mikolaj" ("star man") -- for the North Star. He visits children on Christmas Eve, bringing presents. The Christmas Eve meal begins once the first star is seen.

In Costa Rica, Colombia, and parts of Mexico, the gift bringer is El Nino Jesus, "the infant Jesus."

In Puerto Rico, children receive gifts from the Three Kings on January 6th. Each child puts grass under their bed for the camels and in the morning the grass is replaced with gifts.

Jultomten or Tomten in Sweden. Jultomten visits in the evening before Christmas day, pulling a big bag of julklappar (Christmas presents) in the deep snow.

På norsk (in Norwegian) "Julenissen" arrives on the evening of the 24th.

In the Netherlands, he is called Kerstman. He flies through the sky with his reindeers and puts gifts under the Christmas tree on the 25th of December. De Kerstman lives in Finland. His counterpart "Sinterklaas" is another saint, who is celebrated on the 5th of December. Sinterklaas comes back every year from his home in Spain by steamboat, together with him are a whole group of "zwarte pieten" who help him while he's riding on the roofs - distributing gifts through the chimney.

In Finland, he is called Joulupukki and his home is in Lapland in the north part of Finland called Korvatunturl. Also in Finland, the Swedish-speaking Finns (finlandssvenskar) call him Julgubben.

In Spain the children the night of January 5th put their shoes under the Christmas tree and have presents from the Three Kings (Los Reyes Magos: Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar). Santa Claus is called Papa Noel and there are children who have presents both days on December 25th (from Papa Noel) and on January 6th (from the Three Kings).

In Russia, he is called Grandfather Frost or Ded Moroz. Also, there is Babooska the person who was searching for Christ the night he was born. She spoke to the Three Wise Men or Three Kings on their way to find him, they offered their company to her. But she replied I am too old, so the Three Men went on without her and she set search the following day but the "King" had gone from his birth place and when Babooska heard the news she decided to give her presents for Christ to the childern in her country Russia every year on the 13th of Dec to make them happy.

He is also called Kriss Kringle - origin unknown.

He is also called St. Nick origin Turkey.

Télapó is Santa Claus in Hungarian.

In Italy, he is called Babbo Natale. Also, they recieve their presents on January 6th from the gift bringer an old lady called Befana.

Black Peter, St Nick's helper which originates from Morocco or Liberia.

In China, he is called Shengdan Laoren.

In Denmark they call him, Julemand.

In Hong Kong they call him Sing dan lo ian in Cantonese.

In Slovenia they call him, Bozicek.

In Latvia Santa Claus is called Ziemmassve'tku veci'tis.

In the country Uruguay he is called Papá Noel.

In Lithuania, Santa Claus is called Kaledu Senis.

In Portugal, Santa Claus is known as Pai Natal. He brings presents on Christmas Eve. However, the portuguese tradition says the presents in that night are brought by the Newborn Jesus "Menino Jesus".

In Estonia he is called Jouluvana.

In Ireland he is called Santa Claus and children abbreviate this to just Santy.

Many children in the Hindu religion receive gifts from their god Ganesha during the Holiday Season.

In Austria, children get presents from Christkindl, the Christ Child on the 24th of December.

In Greece, Santa Claus is called "Aghios Vassilis" and he comes on the night of 31st December leaving the presents under the tree for the children to find them on New Year's Day.

In Hawaii, Santa Claus is known as Kanakaloka.

In Armenian, Santa Clause is Gaghant Baba and he brings presents to all the good girls and boys.

The name for Santa in Yugoslavia is Deda Mraz.

In Croatia, he is called Bozicnjak.

In Bulgaria they call him Diado Coleda.

In El Salvador, for some families Santa Claus brings gifts on Christmas Eve to those children who are well behaved. People get together with the family, children go to bed and find a gift on December 25th.

In Urdu he is called Baba Christmass.

In Romania, Santa Claus is Mos Craciun and he comes on the night of the 24th of December bringing presents. Also, the night of the 5th of December is Mos Nicolae (St. Nicholas) puts candies in the good children boots or a stick in the bad ones.

In Nevis/St. Kitts in the Caribbean, Santa Claus comes up from under the sea, not from the North Pole.

In Albanian he is called Urime Krishtlindjet.

The black panther is actually a black leopard and these cats are born in the same litter as normally marked cats and also carry the rosette markings. The spotted markings are masked by the darkness of the fur.

The melantistic leopard (the term used for the black cat) is most generally found in the dense, wet forested areas of India and south east Asia, where the coloration gives the cat a hunting advantage.

Black leopards (the so-called "black panthers" ... often wrongfully mistaken for a cougar) occur most frequently in humid forest habitats (Kingdon 1977), but are merely a color variation, not a subspecies.

Melanistic ... derived from melanin, a dark coloured skin and hair pigment. This melanism in cats results in the fur of the animal being very dark or black in colour.

The spotted markings of the animal can be faintly seen through the dark fur, especially at certain angles in bright sunlight.

History of Halloween, like any other festival's history is inspired through traditions that have transpired through ages from one generation to another.

We follow them mostly as did our dads and grandpas. And as this process goes on, much of their originality get distorted with newer additions and alterations. It happens so gradually, spanning over so many ages, that we hardly come to know about these distortions. At one point of time it leaves us puzzled, with its multicolored faces. Digging into its history helps sieve out the facts from the fantasies which caught us unaware. Yet, doubts still lurk deep in our soul, especially when the reality differs from what has taken a deep seated root into our beliefs. The history of Halloween Day, as culled from the net, is being depicted here in this light.

This is to help out those who are interested in washing off the superficial hues to reach the core and know things as they truly are. 'Trick or treat' may be an innocent fun to relish on the Halloween Day. But just think about a bunch of frightening fantasies and the scary stories featuring ghosts, witches, monsters, evils, elves and animal sacrifices associated with it.

They are no more innocent. Are these stories a myth or there is a blend of some reality? Come and plunge into the halloween history to unfurl yourself the age-old veil of mysticism draped around it.

Behind the name... Halloween, or the Hallow E'en as they call it in Ireland , means All Hallows Eve, or the night before the 'All Hallows', also called 'All Hallowmas', or 'All Saints', or 'All Souls' Day, observed on November 1. In old English the word 'Hallow' meant 'sanctify'. Roman Catholics, Episcopalians and Lutherians used to observe All Hallows Day to honor all Saints in heaven, known or unknown.

They used to consider it with all solemnity as one of the most significant observances of the Church year. And Catholics, all and sundry, was obliged to attend Mass. The Romans observed the holiday of Feralia, intended to give rest and peace to the departed. Participants made sacrifices in honor of the dead, offered up prayers for them, and made oblations to them.

The festival was celebrated on February 21, the end of the Roman year. In the 7th century, Pope Boniface IV introduced All Saints' Day to replace the pagan festival of the dead. It was observed on May 13. Later, Gregory III changed the date to November 1. The Greek Orthodox Church observes it on the first Sunday after Pentecost. Despite this connection with the Roman Church, the American version of Halloween Day celebration owes its origin to the ancient (pre-Christian) Druidic fire festival called "Samhain", celebrated by the Celts in Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Samhain is pronounced "sow-in", with "sow" rhyming with cow.

In Ireland the festival was known as Samhein, or La Samon, the Feast of the Sun. In Scotland, the celebration was known as Hallowe'en. In Welsh it's Nos Galen-gaeof (that is, the Night of the Winter Calends. The Celtic Gods of the dead were Gwynn ap Nudd for the British, and Arawn for the Welsh.

The Irish did not have a "lord of death" as such. Thus most of the customs connected with the Day are remnants of the ancient religious beliefs and rituals, first of the Druids and then transcended amongst the Roman Christians who conquered them.

Valdemarsdag 15. juni er en en festdag til minde om miraklet i Lyndanisse i Estland, hvor Dannebrog efter sagn faldt ned fra himlen,

Hvorfor flages der i grunden lige i dag, spørger mange, når de blandt andet ser flagalléen i Gilleleje. Det er Valdemarsdag, 15. juni - og dermed flagets dag, som markeres landet over med flagning. Valdemarsdag 15. juni er en en festdag til minde om miraklet i Lyndanisse i Estland, hvor Dannebrog efter sagn faldt ned fra himlen, fortæller Foreningen Dansk Kultur.

År 1210 var kong Valdemar, med tilnavnet Sejr, i gang med at bekrige de vantro estere - i deres egen interesse naturligvis. I politisk korrekt sprogbrug var det nemlig ikke en rigtig krig, men en "kampagne", et korstog i Guds navn og med Pavens velsignelse, fortæller 'Dansk Kultur'.

Det var en aktion med henblik på at rive de stakkels uoplyste mennesker ud af deres djævelske vildfarelser og føre dem til den sande tro og rette civilisation, og hvad kunne være Gud mere velbehageligt? I slaget ved Lyndanisse 1219 bønhørte Vorherre da også biskop Anders Sunesens indtrængende bønner og sendte sin himmelske billigelse ned til danskerne i form af korsflaget.

Er det en myte?
Mistroiske mennesker kalder denne historie en myte, mens det hævdes at være mere sandsynligt, at flaget stammer fra Johanitterordenen, der kæmpede i samme område under et korsbanner. De danske riddere kunne således have annekteret det og bragt det med hjem. Men alligevel - myten er da god nok til en fejring af verdens længst vajende nationalflag. Gudgivet eller ej.

Oprindeligt var flaget måske nok et symbol på den internationale kamp for den sande tro, men under alle omstændigheder blev det til symbolet for "det danske". Heri indgår forestillingen om samhørighed i riget, fællesskab i samfundet og fornemmelsen af samfølelse med fortiden, kort sagt er det nationale symboliseret visuelt med dannebrog.

Danneborg-navnet
Navnet Dannebrog er også noget ganske særligt. Andre folk har deres flagga, Union Jack eller Tricolore, men Dannebrog er et navn med lange rødder.

Det allerførste dannebrog var danske vikingers hærflag, det tegn som samlede danske drenge i kamp mod fjenderne. Altså hverken et symbol for riget eller samfundet, men kun et kamptegn. I vikingetiden kaldtes det Danebroge - danernes klæde. Ordet "brog" betyder klædestof, og dette Dannebrog var et rødt klæde broderet med en sort ravn. Ravnen var Odins fugl.

Alt det er nu mere end tusind år siden, og den gamle ravnefane er for længst glemt. Først hundreder af år senere kom dannebrog til syne igen, men altså i et helt nyt design, thi Odins sorte ravn var skiftet ud med Kristi hvide kors, mens dugen var så rød som før.

Korsflaget ændrede i tidens løb position fra hærflag til kongeflag, og så igen i 1800-tallet til nationalflag som folkets flag, og i denne sidste rolle har intet andet flag kunne måle sig med det i popularitet. Det danske folk har brugt det i hus og have, på lagkagen og på juletræet, i fest og i glæde - og i sorg. Dannebrog har været virkelig elsket og æret i Danmark.

Grundlovsdag .........

Grundlovsdag er altid den 5, juni. På denne dag blev den første Grundlov underskrevet af Frederik den Syvende.

Sammen eller ej?
Oprindeligt var dagen en festdag for demokratiet, som politiske partier holdt i fællesskab. Senere er det blevet almindeligt, at dagen bruges til partipolitiske arrangementer.

Folkefest
Selvom der er tale om en politisk festdag, var det tidligere almindeligt. at der også arrangeredes bal eller lignende, når den mere seriøse del var overstået.

Grundlovsdag

Grundlovsdagen er nok det tætteste, som danskerne kommer på at have en "nationaldag". Selvom vi måske ikke gør så meget ud af det, som nordmændene fx gør med 17. maj, markeres den alligevel på flere måder.

Allerede i årene efter Grundlovens indførelse i 1849, blev årsdagen markeret som en særlig, nationalt præget festdag. Der blev afholdt friluftsmøder og stævner, men også aviserne markerede dagen. Fx med digte til friheden og loven fx af Carl Ploug, billeder af Frederik den Syvende eller andre af de implicerede, blev publiceret i aviser og på flyveblade.

Højre og venstre for sig
Oprindeligt havde det været almindeligt, at Grundlovsfesterne var fællesarrangementer. Man mødtes i fx et lokalt anlæg eller lignende, der til lejligheden var blevet pyntet op - ikke mindst med dannebrogsflag. Der var forskellige taler; for kongen, grundloven og fædrelandet, naturligvis - og evt. også for kvinderne. Men efterhånden fik de lokale politikere svært ved at lade være med at benytte lejligheden til at få et stort publikum af potentielle vælgere i tale. I 1870´erne begyndte det at blive almindeligt, at de politiske partier holdt deres egne grundlovsmøder, hvor man så også brugte lejligheden til at vurdere den politiske situation og markere partiets visioner for udviklingen. Det var ikke mindst partierne Højre (i dag: Det konservative Folkeparti) og Venstre, der førte an i denne udvikling. Det nye Socialdemokratiske parti havde jo også deres egen festdag, Arbejdernes 1. maj. Grundlovsfesterne kunne trække mange deltagere, fx var der ca. 42.000 deltagere i Højres Grundlovsfest i Kongens Have i København i 1885.

Bal bagefter
Til trods for Grundlovsdagens efterhånden meget klare profil som en politisk dag, stod også elementet af folkefest stærkt. Ofte var der udskænkning og der var arrangeret bal bagefter, hvor egnens ungdom og de mindre politisk interesserede også kunne få noget ud af dagen.

I remember Easter Sunday
It was colorful and fun
The new life that I'd begun
In my new cage.

I was just a little thing
When they brought me from the store
And they put me on the floor
In my cage.

They would take me out to play
Love and pet me all the time
Then at day's end I would climb
In my cage.

But as days and weeks went by
I saw less of them it seemed
Of their loving touch I dreamed

In the night outside their house
I felt sad and so neglected
Often scared and unprotected

In the dry or rainy weather

I just sat there growing older

'TWAS THE DAY BEFORE EASTER

'Twas the day before Easter
..and all through the woods,
The bunnies were busy
packing their goods.
The eggs were all colored
so pretty and bright,
All things were "go"
for the big, special night.

The baskets were waiting,
all decorated with care,
In hopes that the Bunny
soon would be there.
My little brother Sam
was asleep in his bed,
While visions of Easter eggs
rolled round his head.

And I in my pajamas
with the cat on my lap,
I had just settled down
for a quick little nap.
When outside the window
I heard a great noise,
I sprang from my chair
and jumped over some toys.

As quick as a flash
to the window I flew,
I pulled up the shade
and, OH, what a view.
The moon on the meadow
cast a bright golden glow
And the wind blew the flowers
to and then fro.

Then all of a sudden
from out of nowhere,
Came some lively bunnies,
hopping here, hopping there!
Leading the group
with ears long and funny
Was a plump, all-white rabbit...
That's right...the EASTER BUNNY!

The bunnies hopped past,
one, two, three, four,
The rabbit called out
and then there were more.
"Come, Peter!, Come, Flopsy!,
Come, Benny!, Come, Joe!
Now hop along! Hop along! Hop along! GO!"

So up on each doorstep
the bunnies did hop,
With baskets of eggs.
(Let's hope they don't drop)!
Just at that moment,
on the porch down below,
Came the stomping of feet
'Twas the rabbit, I know!

As I stepped from my window
I heard a loud sound.
Through the door came the rabbit
with a leap and a bound.
He was furry and soft
from his head to his feet.
To see him so close
was really quite neat.

He was surrounded by eggs
that had been carefully dyed.
Easter eggs galore he soon would hide.
His eyes were all twinkles,
His nose was so pink,
And I can't be too sure,
but I think he did wink.

He had a kind face
and a big fluffy tail
That bobbed up and down
like a boat with a sail.
A twitch of his nose
and a flick of his ear
Was his way of saying,
"You've nothing to fear."

He uttered no sound
as he hopped all about
Hiding the eggs and leaving no doubt,
That the Easter bunny had come
like he does every year...
Bringing baskets of happiness
to children so dear.
